Opera “Barefoot Gen”

– About the music

The “Barefoot Gen (Japanese: Hadashi no Gen)” is a series of Japanese graphic novels drawn by Keiji Nakazawa. The Nakazawa- family was in Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Hiroshima-city, and Keiji lost his father, a sister and a brother due to the fire caused by the bomb. As a survivor of this catastrophic destruction, he decided to let people know what he saw in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb exploded. The Barefoot Gen was translated in more then ten countries.

On late 1970’s, Hiroshima-city commissioned an opera based on these graphic novels to Takanori Shimizu, a poet in Hiroshima, and a composer Hiroshi Hoshina. Hoshina was not in Hiroshima when he experienced the World War II, but still he sympathized with Shimizu’s texts because he recalled his memory when the Tokyo city was burned out by a series of firebomb air raids. On 1981, the opera was premiered by Yasuhiko Aguni (director), Kazukiyo Inoue (cond.), Kazuko Kamiya (Gen, soprano) and the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.
The opera was revived on 1991 and 2012 (with a minimized orchestra with synthesizers).

– Notes

The first version of FuMon was composed for symphonic band as one of the compulsory pieces for the All Japan Band Competition in 1986. Because the first version had to fit the time constraints of the competition, the composer, Hiroshi Hoshina was not able to complete the intended symphonic length version. In 1999, it was extended and revised into what is now known as “FuMon (original version).”
This original version was arranged for orchestra and premiered on 15th August 2009 by Takashi Akiyama and the Hoshina Academy Chamber Orchestra “Ensemble = Harmonia.” The word “FuMon” means “wind ripple” in Japanese. Like most of Hoshina’s works, this piece was not composed as a program piece, and it was not intended to evoke a specific image throughout, so it was difficult to name the piece. The title was finally chosen when the composer opened a Japanese dictionary and happened upon these beautiful Chinese characters.

Oraison et Jeux ~ sous un rai lumineux (pour hautbois et orchestre)

This French title, which means “Prayer and Play – under a bright shine”, was given by a friend of the composer as a French translation of the Japanese title. The piece was originally composed for solo-oboe and piano in 2003 for Tomoyuki Hirota, the principal oboist in the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, to perform. It was re-arranged for solo-oboe and orchestra in 2004 and solo-oboe and symphonic band in 2006.

The structure of the piece is a traditional ter- nary form. The composer believes that keep- ing to traditional styles rather than imposing gimmicky contemporary twists allows the performers to interpret the music using their own creativity and stylistic interpretation. He believes that by giving the performers more freedom to interpret the music, the oboe’s characteristic tones will shine through. This philosophy is also shown in his newer concer- to for solo-horn and orchestra, “Miko Dance”.

Requiem – in mourning of the death of a young man –

This music was originally composed for a clarinet orchestra to mourn the victims of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. In 2004 a young member of one of the com- poser’s orchestras died, and the piece was remade in his memory. The composer infused his feelings into the music for people tested by tragedies.

    1. Disaster. Wood instruments express deep sadness, strong frustration and confusion of people in a sudden disaster.

    2. Grief. Strings and Wind instruments represent people’s sense of emptiness and de- spondency that comes after a loss.

    3. Dirge. A theme for departed souls is played repeatedly by strings.

    4. Recovery. Brass instruments play glorious fanfare for the courage of people who fi- nally learn to overcome their sorrow.

Premired by the friends of the young man for whom this was arranged and replayed by the Hoshina Academy Chamber Orchestra after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.

The title “kai-sou-fu” in Japanese is an impressionistic term that implys memories of old days. Because there is no English translation for this title, a friend of the composer suggested the French title, which means “souvenirs from year to year.” This music includes a short story written by the composer to evoke the feelings the composer is trying to convey.

Imagine an old man sitting on a bench in a back yard with a cup of coffee, remembering days gone by. A retrospective melody plays repeatedly, sometimes quietly, sometimes emotionally, always changing.

Suddenly, as he day-dreams, the old man feels young again and starts to dance with unsteady steps. Before long, he tires and returns to his bench. The afternoon sun shines golden as it sets. The old man’s coffee has gone cold and his days have caught up to him. The nostalgic melody repeats over and over as he continues to remember his past.

Arranged for Orchestra at a request of the Hoshina Academy Chamber Orchestra “Ensemble=Harmonia” and premiered on 22nd. Sep. 2001.

    Variations for Orchestra

This concert piece consist of a theme, five variations and funeral march (finale).

The Variation for Orchestra was composed at the request of the Okayama University Sym- phony Orchestra in 1998. A melancolic theme is followed by five variations and the finale–a vigorous con fuoso; a con grazia with a beau- tiful obbligato of solo-violin; a giocoso with French hermonies; an alla marcia; a burlesco; and a mesto, a funeral march (finale). Emo- tional fortessimo phrases played by brass in- struments at the end of the finale evoke the word “lamentation”, which is given to the arrangement for wind orchestra of this work.

The finale is dedicated to a gifted composer Bin Kaneda, composer Hoshina’s close friend who died in 2002. Each composer composed a funeral march for the other, each teasing the other about which one would live longer. In 1986 Kaneda’s was first, and he composed “Ah!” for symphonic band and sent the score to Hoshina with a hand-written suffix “Hiroshi Hoshina” at the end of the printed title. Hoshina finally fulfilled his promise, com- posing “Lamentation To ─”, meaning “to Bin Kaneda” in 1998 for his arrangement for wind orchestra.

Oraison et Jeux – sous un rai lumineux (pour hautbois et wind band)

A fantastic oboe concerto with a rhythmical middle part and cadenza. Arranged from oboe sonata with a piano.

    Fu-Mon (wind ripple) original version
